Dudley nabs third title of year in women's high jump

MT qualifies seven on Day 1 of Niswonger Invitational

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. - Middle Tennessee grabbed seven qualifying spots and nine top 10 final finishes on Day 1 of the Niswonger Invitational.

Ann Dudley won her third high jump competition of the season after out-doing her competitors by .1 meters, winning the women's event by clearing a height of 5 feet, 10 inches (1.78m).  

The Blue Raiders qualified all five of their runners for the 60 meter hurdle finals as Christal Wilson (8.81) won the women's prelims and Junior Cadet (8.42) set a personal best in the men's 60 meter hurdle, placing second and besting his previous personal best by over .3 seconds.

Other female qualifiers for MT were Ann Dudley (8.86) and India Hammond (9.08). They were third and seventh, respectively. On the men's side, Bryson Lillard qualified fourth after a finishing in 8.60.

In the men's 400 meter dash, Steven Palmer returned to action for the first time since the MT Christmas Invitational and claimed third in the first of nine heats. His time of 49.63 qualified him third for the finals.

Jasmine Abrams set a career-best time of 7.79 in the women's 60 meter dash prelims, earning the 11th spot in tomorrow's final. Sheniece Daphness (7.85) was competitive in the prelim, but missed a spot in the finals by three positions.

The women's 800 meter race featured three MT athletes as Amber Jackson (2:15.66) and Rachel Islam (2:17.82) finished in the top 10. Gipson was 12th with a time of 2:18.91.

Robinson Simatei was the Blue Raiders' top finisher in the men's 800 meter race, placing sixth and crossing the finish in 1:57.02. MT's Daniel Ketter (1:58.57) and Asa Bowman (1:58.58) were neck and neck throughout the race a provided a photo finish as Ketter was 13th and Bowman grabbed 14th. Lyle Haywood's time of 2:00.52 placed him 18th.

France Makabu bounded over 12 meters for the third week in a row in the women's triple jump, earning third place with a distance of 12.15m (39-10.50 feet).  India Hammond was sixth in the event with a distance of 38-4.25 feet (11.69m).

For the men, Junior Cadet placed fourth with a jump of 14.34m (47-0.25 feet) and Nigel Jones was eighth (13.73m / 45-0.25 feet).  Cordairo Golden rounded out the top 10 with a jump of 13.06 meters.

The final race of the day was the men's invitational 5000 meter run, open for the top 20 participants in the event. Middle Tennessee's Alden Dixon and Keith Davis were among the competitors, with Dixon cruising to a sixth-place finish in 5:10.16 and Davis finishing in 5:43.86 (16th).
