How you can support truly independent journalism

Truly independent journalism plays a central role in democracy – yet, in America today, with a pivotal election fast approaching, reporters are routinely cast as evil and dishonest. This was among the reflections of Andrew Buncombe, our Chief US Correspondent, in a recent article that documented his arrest and detention for the “crime” of reporting on protests in Seattle.

Today we are faced with many urgent reasons for journalism to rise to the challenge, to be fearless and impartial and honest, to hold the most powerful to account and expose the truth when so many others would rather control the message.

From the Covid-19 crisis to the conduct of police in a society with the highest incarceration rate in the world, and where Black Lives Matter protests may represent the biggest demonstrations in US history – if ever you have wanted to support quality, trustworthy journalism, now is the time.

Every dollar given to The Independent’s Supporter Program will fund additional editorial projects that will be available to all our readers around the world – including more than 33 million each month in the US. The more support we receive, the more journalism we will be able to offer. Please consider making a contribution. Thank you.
