August is usually a dead month for art - except in Edinburgh, which comes alive for the Edinburgh Festival. Almost all the established venues stage their major show of the year, and the list of smaller, private galleries doubles.

August is usually a dead month for art - except in Edinburgh, which comes alive for the Edinburgh Festival. Almost all the established venues stage their major show of the year, and the list of smaller, private galleries doubles.

This year looks like being one of the best for a while. At the National Gallery on the Mound, Constable's Clouds presents the most informal and appealing side of one of the greatest landscape painters: Constable the weatherman.

At the National Gallery of Modern Art on Belford Road, The Private Klee brings more than 130 works by Paul Klee for the only British showing of a private Swiss collection of work by this most magical, mystical, 20th-century artist.

Smaller shows worth tracking down include Jon Schueler, a reappraisal of the great American Abstract Expressionist at my gallery, and the inventive "Dislocation of the Chair" at the Matthew Architecture Gallery - a clever student's discovery and rescue of a number of bashed-up design classics lurking in the University library.
