Lorraine shocks viewers with Prince Andrew comment following Oprah interview

Lorraine Kelly stunned viewers with a comment about Prince Andrew at the end of her ITV morning show on Tuesday (9 March).

The breakfast TV host addressed Meghan Markle’s bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey, which saw the former Suits star reveal she contemplated taking her own life due to abuse she received after joining the royal family.

“I was ashamed to say it at the time... I just didn’t want to be alive any more,” Markle said, adding: “And that was a very real and clear and frightening and constant thought.”

Elsewhere in the chat, Markle also claimed that a member of the royal family relayed concerns regarding “how dark” the skin of their son Archie would be when he is born. The interview has been described as approaching “worst-case scenario territory” for Buckingham Palace.

In reference to the backlash the royal family are now facing following the interview, Kelly said at the end of the latest episode of Lorraine: “I guess the only person who might be thinking this is all OK is Prince Andrew, right?”

The show’s end credits then began to roll, leaving viewers in shock.

In recent years, Prince Andrew has faced allegations after being linked to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

One of Epstein’s victims, Virginia Roberts Giuffre, alleged in 2015 that she was forced to have sex with Epstein and Prince Andrew, a claim that the Duke of York has denied.

Prince Andrew stepped back from his royal duties in November 2019 after a widely criticised BBC interview in which he defended his friendship with Epstein.

The broadcast was described as “disastrous”.

One viewer wrote in response to Kelly’s comment: Not a fan of Lorraine Kelly but fair play to her for her wee dig about Andrew, I think she is the only one to do so whilst every other media outlet claims Harry and Meghan’s interview is the worst in 85yrs.”

Another called her the “only one brave enough to mention Prince Andrew”.

It’s a polar opposite reaction to Kelly’s fellow ITV broadcaster, Piers Morgan, who is being criticised for his “hateful” remarks against Markle.

Morgan, who suggested he didn’t believe Markle when she said she said she considered suicide, stormed off Good Morning Britain on Tuesday (9 March) after co-presenter Alex Beresford called him out for his behaviour.

Viewers responded by calling him a “coward” and a “thin-skinned narcissist”.
