Aston Villa were left embarrassed today after making a major gaffe in their announcement of the appointment of Remi Garde as their new manager.

Whilst he might not be the most famous of coaches, you would think they would have been capable of correctly spelling the Frenchman's name when announcing the news to the world.

However, Mr Garde's first name was accidentally spelt Remy in the suggested hashtag that accompanied the news.

The lead story on the website had a picture of the former Lyon coach with #WelcomeRemy on it. The same hashtag appeared on the homepage of the website.

The hashtag was designed to help create a buzz on social media about the appointment of Tim Sherwood's successor and it succeeded. Only not quite how the club intended judging by the reaction on Twitter.

Probably not the best start to his Aston Villa career.

Garde told Aston Villa's website: "It is an unbelievable honour to be the manager of such an illustrious football club.

"I've had extremely positive meetings with both the owner, Randy Lerner, and Chief Executive Tom Fox. They have ambitious plans for the Club and I'm excited that they have turned to me to help them realise them.

"Obviously we have a difficult task in front of us but I'm looking forward to the challenge with the support of everyone who loves Aston Villa."
