Giovanni Trapattoni has cast doubt on Shay Given and John O'Shea appearing in Ireland's opening Euro 2012 game against Croatia as he said both must go through rigorous fitness tests over the next week for their injured knee and ankle, respectively.

"When we have the next training session they must show us they are ready," he said.

The manager even intimated that yesterday's surprise starter, Paul McShane, may yet travel to Euro 2012 as part of the squad, adding: "We wait to see about O'Shea and [Kevin] Foley. Until the first game, if we have an injury we can change."

Given that Trapattoni insisted everyone remain "calm" as regards the injury situation, he was in upbeat mood after what was an encouraging 1-0 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina.

"I think we played very well in terms of attitude, mentality and performance. I say it's a good start for the week ahead, for Montecatini [the team's training base in Italy] and Gdansk."

Trapattoni also praised the performances of James McClean, Aiden McGeady and, particularly, Darron Gibson.

"Aiden has grown in confidence. Playing in Russia, he has improved. In the first half, McClean played very well. We wanted to give him the opportunity as it was the first time he played with [Robbie] Keane and [Kevin] Doyle. In the second half, he went down a little. He was running too much and was tired.

"With Gibson, we were trying another type [in midfield]. He was one of the best on the pitch."
