One man has died and another is missing after they were seen apparently jumping from a cliff.

Coastguard rescue teams in Anglesey, North Wales, were scrambled at 8.30pm last night after a woman called the ambulance service.

It is understood the men were reported missing after they were thought to have jumped from cliffs at Cable Bay.

An RAF Sea King helicopter from RAF Valley recovered one of the men from the sea and he was taken to hospital in Bangor, but died on arrival.

A major search for the other man, involving RAF Valley, lifeboat crews and coastguard rescue teams, continued until 1am.

A spokeswoman for the Maritime and Coastguard Agency said a coastguard rescue team from Rhosneigr had resumed a search of the shoreline this morning.

Ray Steadman, head launcher of Holyhead lifeboat, said: "The area is very popular with tourists at this time of year. It has rocky coves, sandy beaches and cliffs.

"At the time of the search it was very dark so we were using flares for illumination and search lights of the all-weather lifeboat."
