Metallica have been confirmed to rock the headline slot at next summer’s Reading and Leeds.

The US heavy metal group will make history by heading up the Main Stage for a record fourth time over August Bank Holiday weekend 2015.

“We are obviously beyond thrilled to be returning to headline the magnificent and mighty double shot at Reading and Leeds for the fourth time,” said drummer Lars Ulrich. “We are practically the house band. Bring it!”

Metallica are not scheduled for any more UK festivals next year, with the other two Reading and Leeds headliners still to be revealed.

“Metallica’s amazing live show promises to be a favourite with rock, metal and genuine music fans at the UK’s most important music festival, perfectly topping a bill of brilliant acts from across the genres,” said festival boss Melvin Benn.

“I’m looking forward to revealing the rest of the Festival line-up which will feature the absolute best of rock, indie, dance and hip hop and will only add to the amazing atmosphere that makes Reading and Leeds so special.”

Metallica, who have sold more than 110 million records worldwide over the past three decades, first headlined Reading Festival 18 years ago. They headlined Glastonbury Festival last summer to rave reviews, despite initial mixed reactions to their booking.

Singer-songwriter Jamie T, indie rockers Manchester Orchestra and hip hoppers Run the Jewels have been announced for Reading and Leeds along with Metallica, as have drum ‘n’ bass maestro Wilkinson, Californian post-hardcore favourites Pierce the Veil and Swedish punk band Refused. Hundreds more acts are also set to play across the weekend.

A second batch of Reading and Leeds tickets is on sale now, with weekend tickets priced at £205 plus booking fee.

The festival runs from 28 to 30 August 2015.
