Puffy eyes don't look good on anyone, but with a few well-applied products you look refreshed and well-rested

The combination of the recent heatwave, global pandemic and working from home has meant feeling well-rested can be hard to come by.

Stress and huge lifestyle changes all play a part in preventing getting a good night’s sleep, and when you’re knackered the first place it shows is your face.

“The skin under our eyes behaves a little differently to the skin elsewhere on our face – it’s naturally thinner and more fragile – this means it’s normally the first area of the face to show signs of tiredness and visible fine lines which is why we get darker circles around this delicate area,” says Warren Dowdall, senior pro artist for Bobbi Brown.

Thankfully, preventing and hiding tired-looking eyes can be done, with fast-acting solutions that can fake a good night's sleep.

From skincare to make-up, concealers to correctors, there’s an army of products at your disposal to help keep fatigue from ruining your day.

Skincare

According to Dowdall, the eye area is not great at keeping itself hydrated as there are fewer oil glands around the eyes.

“It’s also more sensitive and prone to fluid build-up which can cause the look of puffiness and dark circles,” he says.

For a lightweight cream that will hydrate and provide a base for long-lasting makeup, try the Vitamin enriched eye base (Bobbi Brown, £34).

Apply this hydrating cream onto clean, dry skin for a soothing moisturising treatment

Infused with vitamin B, C and E, along with sodium hyaluronate, which when all combined they smooth out then skin while adding a moisture boost which will brighten darker areas of skin.

Apply twice daily, patting in gently with your finger. Try using dabbing motions instead of swiping to avoid pulling on the skin which can speed up skin sagging.

If you’re looking to splash out, this Susanne Kaufmann eye rescue stick (Cult Beauty, £80) is a game-changer that's also perfect for using on the go.

Fo a quick fix in the car, on a plane or even on the bus, glide this rollerball across the under-eye area

Pack in your staycation bag and keep by your bedside, the rollerball applicator is instantly cooling, which works to de-puff eye bags and the formula of alpha-hydroxy acids, caffeine and jasmine sambac flower extract will help prevent water loss and minimise swelling too.

Cheap and cheerful, without scrimping on effectiveness, is The Ordinary caffeine solution 5% + EGCG (Boots, £5.80).

Budget-friendly and effective, this caffeine-infused serum works wonder on puffy skin

A serum that can be used all over to perk up the skin, it’s particularly effective for treating tired eyes, as caffeine reduces puffiness and dark circles.

It’s an easy addition to your skincare routine that will deliver fast results.

For daytime detoxing, pop a pair of the Skyn Iceland hydro cool firming eye gels (Marks & Spencer, £25) while you’re working from your dining table.

Its eye gels are geared towards taking down inflammation via Icelandic glacial water and arctic super fruits.

Keep them in the fridge ten minutes before use for an afternoon pick-me-up.

Make-up

Once you’ve got your skincare sorted, armed with a cup of fresh coffee, our go-to at hiding eye bags is with concealer.

But don’t layer it on too thick without trying the Becca under eye brightening corrector (Space NK, £21) first.

For a brightening base on its own or beneath makeup, dab a small amount of this creamy texture onto dark circles

It contains light-reflecting illuminators that when dabbed under the eyes, before or after your make-up, instantly brightens and evens out skin tone.

The texture is creamy, but not thick and a small amount goes a long way, so this is a product that will last you through many sleepless nights.

When picking a concealer, Dowdall recommends choosing one in a shade lighter than your natural skin tone.

“Apply a small amount of concealer with a concealer blending brush in light, smooth motions from the inner to the outer corners of the eye. For a truly second-skin finish, try patting the product gently with your ring finger,” he says, advising to build it up in super-fine layers if you want more coverage without any caking.

This bareMinerals barepro 16 hour full coverage concealer stick (Feel Unique, £20.76) is easy to swipe onto the skin directly from the tube or you can take a concealer brush to it for a more precise application.

This stick concealer can be applied using a brush or your finger if you're short on time

If you’re in a rush, apply and blend with your finger for a full coverage, long-wearing finish. You can also use it to conceal any blemishes too.

However if you’re finding your concealer isn’t masking a poor night’s sleep as well as you like, Dowdall recommends adding a correcting base product into your kit.

According to the make-up artist, a corrector is an absolute must for those of us with more visible darkness under the eye, calling it a “secret weapon” to add instant brightness to the eye.

“Unlike concealers, correctors work by neutralising any discolouration in the skin, meaning anything you apply on top will be more effective. If the discolouration is blueish-purple, choose a bisque shade of corrector, and if it’s a greenish-brown, try a peach shade. If it’s a mixture, try a peach-bisque option. Once you’ve applied your corrector, swipe your concealer on top – the difference will be remarkable.”

One we love is this NYX Professional Makeup 3C palette color correcting concealer (lookfantastic, £11) that you can mix and match to create a flawless base.

Not just under your eyes either, the lavender shader counteracts sallowness while the green cancels out redness too.

Once you’ve completed those makeup steps, Dowdall advises setting the under-eye area with an illuminating powder.

Not only will this keep all your hard work in place all day, but add a last touch of luminosity.

The Charlotte Tilbury airbrush flawless finish (Cult Beauty, £35) is a compact that does just that.

Dust a small amount of this brightening powder onto skin to set your makeup

Finely milled for a lightweight finish that won't cake, you’re make-up won’t be going anywhere fast once this is applied using a fluffy brush.
