Glyndebourne Festival, Glyndebourne, East Sussex
A festival designed to dazzle whatever the weather
Given the recent deluges, Glyndebourne may prove a wash-out when it comes to hampers on the ha-ha lawn, but, with three new productions and three popular revivals, things might be brighter on the musical front.
First of the new offerings is Janácek's fantasy The Cunning Little Vixen, conducted by Glyndebourne's outgoing Music Director, Vladimir Jurowski, and directed by Melly Still.
Next is a new staging of Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro, conducted by Glyndebourne's young Music Director Designate, Robin Ticciati, and directed by Michael Grandage. Finally comes a new coupling of Ravel's sex-comedy L'heure espagnole and his magical children's tale L'enfant et les sortilèges: Glyndebourne may regret ditching Maurice Sendak's 1980s designs, but Kazushi Ono is a fine conductor.
The revivals are Rossini's La Cenerentola (directed by Peter Hall), Puccini's La bohème (David McVicar) and Purcell's The Fairy Queen (Jonathan Kent).
