After a summer dominated by films of an escapist hue, this "values-driven" festival marks its fifth birthday with a celebration of cinema at its most engaged.

Over two weeks, film-makers from around the world share issues of global concern, opening with the Martin Scorsese-produced Surviving Progress, a meditation on where evolution is taking us.

Also included are Lucky, which investigates HIV in South Africa; The Dancing Forest, a study of sustainable food production; The Price of Sex, an exposé of sex trafficking; Chasing Ice, an account of the National Geographic snapper James Balog's Extreme Ice Survey, an attempt to create a photographic record of climate change; and We're Not Broke, a crack at corporate tax-dodgers.

Q&As, bike-powered screenings, workshops, shorts and street theatre also feature, as does fun stuff including a ceilidh and – presumably because a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down – a family screening of Mary Poppins.
