An 11-year-old boy racer is in a critical condition in hospital after being involved in a serious crash.

Keir Millar, from Lockerbie, was injured in a race at Lochgelly Raceway in Fife on Saturday.

Organisers initially said he had been killed but police have confirmed that Keir is being treated at an Edinburgh hospital.

The youngster was competing in the Ministox racing series for 10 to 15-year-olds and won the Ninja Kart Championship in England last year.

In a post on Facebook, Hardie Race Promotions (HRP) initially wrongly said Keir had died, announcing the cancellation of an event at Lochgelly on Friday as a mark of respect.

It described the boy as “a fantastic young man who was always smiling and loved his racing”.

The post said Keir had become a world champion at the age of just 10 and praised his “talent, ability and, above all, maturity far beyond his years”.

A spokesperson for Police Scotland said officers in Fife were called to Lochgelly at around 8pm on Saturday following reports that an 11-year-old boy had sustained “serious injuries” during a stock car event.

“He was conveyed to the Victoria Hospital in Fife, then the Sick Kids Hospital in Edinburgh (Royal Hospital for Sick Children) where his condition remains serious,” he added.
