Police and the city’s zoo are on the lookout for an escaped group of monkeys, following reports of the primates swinging from trees in a local park in Cincinnati, Ohio.

The monkeys were reportedly seen swinging from trees in the city’s cemetery overnight on Wednesday, following a number of sightings.

Officers from the Cincinnati Police Department were called to the area of West Price Hill and the St Joseph Cemetery at about 10pm on Wednesday, to reports of sightings of the monkeys.

At least two calls were made to dispatchers, although officers have been unable to make further contact with the callers, reported the Cincinnati Enquirer.

The monkeys are thought to belong to a private owner, and were not from the Cincinnati Zoo, according to the CPD and the Enquirer.

A spokesperson for the zoo, Michelle Curley, confirmed to the Enquirer that the CPD reached out for information and assistance.

"We are evaluating the situation to see if there’s anything we can do to assist the Cincinnati Police Department, said Ms Curely, who added that “Nothing could be done in the dark.”

According to the Enquirer, the search is ongoing with no further sightings of the primates.

A video allegedly showing the monkeys swinging from a tree on Wednesday also circulated online, although it is not clear if it is genuine.

Sammy Trinh, who shared the video to Facebook, wrote alongside the footage: “Only in Price Hill there was real life wild life monkeys swinging outside and they was big as”.

Ms Trinh added that the monkeys were “swinging outside my house”, and more than 1,700 people have since viewed the footage.
