Wimbledon 2021 LIVE: Djokovic defeats Shapovalov - latest men’s semi-finals updates after Berrettini wins
Follow all the action as four players vie for their place in Sunday’s final
Follow all the action from the men’s singles semi-finals at Wimbledon.
The opening match on Centre Court will see Queen’s Club champion Matteo Berrettini face Hubert Hurkacz. Riding a wave of momentum coming into the tournament, Berrettini has been in impressive form throughout and produced a serving masterclass to see off Felix Auger-Aliassime in the quarter-finals. Hurkacz, though, has just pulled off perhaps the biggest victory of his career, nervelessly thrashing Roger Federer in straight sets, to reach the semi-final of a grand slam for the first time in his career.
Then it will be the turn of defending champion Novak Djokovic, who is now within touching distance of equalling Federer and Rafael Nadal’s men’s grand slam record. The Serbian has only dropped one set all tournament and will still feel fresh after a somewhat kind draw. That is not the case for Denis Shapovalov, who came through an epic five-set quarter-final against Karen Khachanov. The 22-year-old Canadian, who conquered Andy Murray emphatically in the third round, should provide a far tougher test for Djokovic, who remains the clear favourite to win his sixth Wimbledon. Novak Djokovic defeats Denis Shapovalov to reach Wimbledon final
Novak Djokovic has defeated Denis Shapovalov in straight sets to reach the Wimbledon final and stand on the precipice of equalling Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal’s men’s grand slam record.
“I don’t think the scoreline says enough about the performance or the match. He was serving for the first set and was probably the better player, had many chances.
“I would like to give him a big round of applause for everything he has done today and also this two weeks. We are going to see a lot of him in the future, he is a great player.
“The most special tournament in the world for me, on this court, and there is no holding back. Once you step out, particularly at the latter stages of an event I dream of winning and the dream keeps going.
“I am trying to take out the maximum of my own abilities each match and see what happens.
“At this stage of my career, Grand Slams are everything and I have been very privileged to make history in the sport I truly love.
“Every time I hear there is something on the line that is historic it inspires me but at the same time I have to balance it and win only the next match.”
WIMBLEDON 2021: DJOKOVIC DEFEATS SHAPOVALOV
An ace completes Djokovic’s hold to love and the defending champion is through to the Wimbledon final again. This was by far his toughest test of the tournament and he answered every question. He will face Matteo Berrettini on Sunday knowing victory will see him equal Federer and Nadal’s men’s grand slam record as well as keeping him on course for the Golden Slam.
WIMBLEDON 2021: DJOKOVIC 6-5 SHAPOVALOV
Djokovic breaks after Shapovalov produces two double faults and three unforced errors at the crucial moment again!
WIMBLEDON 2021: DJOKOVIC 5-5 SHAPOVALOV
No such concern for Shapovalov on serve this time. He holds emphatically to 15 to turn the pressure back on to Djokovic. Like so often, though, the Serbian handles it without so much as a shrug, going one better and holding to love. We’re approaching the crucial point where Shapovalov’s nerves have deserted him. Can he steady himself this time?
WIMBLEDON 2021: DJOKOVIC 3-4 SHAPOVALOV
Again, Shapovalov withstands the tide of momentum, saving two break points to keep the set on serve. The Canadian might have squandered chances to break himself, but he’s showing impressive mettle to stay in this third set.
WIMBLEDON 2021: DJOKOVIC 2-3 SHAPOVALOV
An unforced error at 30-15 puts pressure on Shapovalov’s serve. He answers the call this time, though, with a tremendous second serve forcing the error from Djokovic.
WIMBLEDON 2021: DJOKOVIC 1-2 SHAPOVALOV
Shapovalov saves three break points with as many brilliant serves and then an ace seals the hold. This time the Canadian withstands the pressure and the third set remains on serve.
WIMBLEDON 2021: DJOKOVIC 1-1 SHAPOVALOV
Djokovic unleashes an almighty roar! That was a huge hold of serve as he saves three more break points. Shapovalov has imposed himself on every rally, but his blood keeps running hot in the crucial moments and he loses his vein of form again as another chance to break goes begging.
