Golf: Azinger back on course after illness
PAUL AZINGER, the USPGA champion, fully expects to make an impression on his comeback at the Buick Open tournament in Boston tomorrow.
Azinger, out of action since beginning treatment for cancer last November, was diagnosed with a lymphoma in his right shoulder shortly after helping the United States to retain the Ryder Cup.
'I wouldn't be here if I didn't think I could be competitive,' the 34-year-old American said. 'I feel I've beaten this thing, and I'm really excited about Thursday and getting it all going again.'
Azinger was enjoying the best year of his career before being afflicted with cancer. He won three tournaments, including the PGA Championship and finished second in the money list last year with dollars 1,458,456 ( pounds 1m). He plans to defend his PGA title next week in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
