David Guetta has come under fire for attempting to honour George Floyd by remixing a speech by Martin Luther King Jr.

The French DJ had been hosting a live-streamed event for coronavirus relief charities, during which he raised an impressive £540,000 ($670,000), when he decided to pay tribute to Floyd, who died last week in Minneapolis after a police officer knelt on his neck.

“The world is going through difficult times and America too, actually,” Guetta said.

“Last night, I knew we were going to do this and I made a special record… in honour of George Floyd. I really hope we can see more unity and more peace when already things are so difficult.”

Offering a “shout out to his family”, the “Titanium” DJ proceeded to play an electronic fance track sampling Luther King Jr.’s famous “I Have A Dream” speech.

The video was swiftly shared and mocked online, with one Twitter user joking: “We’ve found it. The whitest way to react to racism.”

“Yes David Guetta,” another wrote, “I’m sure that’s exactly what George Floyd would have wanted... an EDM banger sampling Martin Luther King.”

Meanwhile, one social media user said: “There’ve been a lot of crimes committed against my ppl this weekend, but David Guetta putting a drop behind MLK’s “I have a dream” speech is up there.”
