Police have arrested two teenagers following a riot involving around 140 gatecrashers who turned up at a secluded home for a party that got out of hand.

The party, at an address in Copthorne, Surrey, was supposed to be private but it appears that word spread on Facebook and "large-scale disorder" occurred that needed the involvement of a helicopter.

Officers were called at around 10pm on Saturday when it appeared neighbours called the police because they were concerned about the numbers of people and the noise.

A helicopter from the National Police Air Support Unit was scrambled, along with cars and a dog unit to disperse the crowd.

Missiles - described as mainly bottles - were thrown at officers trying to break up the party and several police response cars were damaged, a Surrey Police spokeswoman said.

Inspector Paul Grove said: "This incident demonstrates the dangers which police officers face on a daily basis and a full investigation will now follow to find those responsible for the disturbance in a bid to bring them to justice.

"Surrey Police will not tolerate such violent behaviour against officers and members of the public and thankfully no one was seriously injured."

The pair, both aged 17, have been bailed until 9 July.
