Hayden Panettiere nominates her unborn child to take the ALS ice bucket challenge
The Heroes actress used the charity stunt to confirm her and fiancé Wladimir Klitschko are expecting their first child
Thursday 21 August 2014
The ice bucket challenge has seen all manner of famous people do all manner of ridiculous things.
Charlie Sheen omitted ice completely to dump a bucket of dollar bills over his head, Bill Gates fashioned a special icy dumping pulley while Piers Morgan enjoyed the challenge three-fold submerged in the Caribbean sea.
Hayden Panettiere chose to use her challenge as a platform to announce what, from the fairly obvious large baby bump, we’ve known for some time – that her and boxer fiancé Wladimir Klitschko are expecting their first child.
Though we think one of her nominations might find it a little difficult to take part. You know, still being in the womb and all.
"I accept my ALS Challenge," she tells the camera. "I renominate Kacey Musgraves - you're not getting out of this, Wladimir Klitschko [her fiance], and my unborn child."
Dumping the water over her head was Nashville guest-star Derek Hough (yes, he of rumoured Cheryl-dating fame).
"Holy shhhh," she squealed as the water hit her head and cascaded onto the floor. "Yup, that's cold."
Hough later uploaded the video to his Twitter and Instagram accounts, jokingly captioning it with: "Hayden shortly went into labor after this... Jus kiddin[sic]."
Oh, how they laughed.
The challenge raises money and awareness for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) or Lou Gehrig's disease.
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis affects the brain and the spinal cord. Motor neurons degenerate and die which makes it increasingly difficult for sufferers to move their muscles.
When their muscles aren’t used enough, they stop working entirely and patients with ALS begin to feel weak, have difficulty speaking, swallowing and breathing. In the later stages of the illness, patients may become totally paralyzed.

Those involved the ice bucket challenge can either choose to have a bucket of ice and water dumped over their heads within 24 hours of them being nominated, as well as donating $10, or write out a cheque of $100 to an ALS charity of choice.
