Hello, and – after some delay – welcome to The Independent’s annual Oscar nominations live blog!

The nominations are finally set to be announced today. They’re usually announced in January, but the pandemic caused the ceremony to be pushed back to April, which is the latest it has ever taken place.

There are 23 categories in all, and it’ll be Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Nick Jonas announcing them in a live stream, which you’ll be able to watch above.

The past year has been a hell of a ride for Chloé Zhao, whose film Nomadland fast became the awards frontrunner. It’s currently the favourite to win Best Picture – and, excitingly, will be available to stream on Disney+ (via its Star channel) from 30 April!

If you’ve been following the awards season so far, you’ll have some idea of what other films will be in the running. We’re going to run through a list of the dead certs as well as the not-so-obvious shouts, so you’re fully primed by 12.15pm (when the announcement begins).

Due to a rule change, this is the final year in which there could be less than 10 Best Picture nominations.

Here’s hoping that Minari secures a Best Picture nomination and doesn’t merely get shunted in the International Feature category like it did at the Golden Globes (despite the fact it’s largely in American).
