A day of protests around the world yesterday was marred by violence.

Police in Berlin and Hamburg made 80 arrests after violent confrontations with masked far-left activists. A woman in Berlin was in a critical condition after being hit on the head by a bottle when anarchists lit a fire and pelted firefighters with missiles.

Police in Zurich, Switzerland, fired rubber bullets at hundreds of protesters who defied a city centre marching ban.

Three people died and many were critically wounded when a grenade was thrown at people dancing on a basketball court in Cotabato, in the southern Philippines.

Police in armoured vehicles clashed with 1,500 protesters in Tunceli, Turkey, and arrested 20 including a Kurdish political leader.

Pro-Kremlin parties and trade unions staged a 140,000-strong rally near Red Square in Moscow.

In Sydney, mounted police repeatedly charged into 500 demonstrators blockading the offices of a company that runs five refugee detention centres.
