INTERNAZIONALE'S hopes of catching Milan in the Italian League virtually disappeared yesterday when they could only draw at home to Foggia after Ruben Sosa missed a penalty. With only two more games to play, Milan remain four points ahead after their 1-1 draw at Cagliari on Friday.

Sosa, whose presence has been vital to Inter this season, scored after 27 minutes when he capped a deft dribbling run with a sharply-angled shot into the net. Three minutes later Inter were awarded a penalty which Sosa converted - but then had to take again after the referee spotted an infringement. To the fury of a packed San Siro, the 27-year-old Uruguayan missed the retake.

Defending doggedly in the second half, Inter looked set to cling on to their lead - but eight minutes from time Luigi De Agostini was sent off for foul play and five minutes later Foggia's Dutch winger, Bryan Roy, headed home.

The Uefa Cup winners, Juventus, kept themselves on track thanks to a goal by David Platt against Sampdoria. Platt scored in a goalmouth scramble after a 47th-minute corner. Sampdoria had gone ahead after only four minutes with a header from Vladimir Jugovic.

Another Uefa Cup hopeful, Lazio, failed to give coach Dino Zoff much to celebrate on his 100th match with the club, losing 2-0 at lowly Brescia.

A rare blunder by the veteran keeper, Hans van Breukelen, plunged the Dutch champions, PSV Eindhoven, to a 1-0 defeat at Vitesse Arnhem which could cost them the league title. PSV are only one point ahead of Feyenoord, who have a game in hand and notched a 3-0 home victory over Willem II Tilburg on Saturday. PSV have just one match left.

The Vitesse defender, Edward Sturing, caught Van Breukelen unawares, leaving the 36-year-old stranded with a powerful 35-yarder 10 minutes before half-time.

The French league said an inquiry would be held into an allegation that Marseille attempted to fix last Thursday's match with Valenciennes. The allegation, denied by Marseille, came from Valenciennes' Jacques Glassmann, who said he had a phone conversation on Wednesday with a Marseille official who offered him a bribe to take it easy in the match.

Bayern Munich suffered a shock 4-2 defeat at Karlsruhe yesterday, yet still head the Bundesliga on goal difference from Werder Bremen.
