The Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Carlo Cudicini fractured his wrists and injured his pelvis after being involved in a serious road accident yesterday morning. The Italian was admitted to hospital after his motorbike collided with a car in Walthamstow, East London.

"A 36-year-old male suffered injuries described as possibly life-changing and was taken to an east London hospital for further assessment and treatment," a police spokesman said. The female driver and child passenger walked away from the car and did not require hospital treatment.

"Carlo has fractured his wrists and injured his pelvis after being involved in a road accident this morning," a club spokesman confirmed. "The Italian goalkeeper has undergone scans under the supervision of club medical staff. The club doctor is with him at hospital where we await the result of tests." The club are expected to release further details about the extent of his injuries later today.

Cudicini has made 12 appearances for Spurs since joining from Chelsea on a free transfer in January. He enjoyed a run of six matches following a thigh injury suffered by first-choice Heurelho Gomes in August, but has since lost his place to the Brazilian and missed last Saturday's 2-0 victory over Sunderland with a back injury. He has, however, spoken of his wish to remain with the White Hart Lane outfit.

"My contract is about to expire, but I would be happy to remain at Tottenham," Cudicini said recently of his future prospects with the club. "However, I would consider Italian clubs if that wasn't possible." The goalkeeper previously spent nine years with Chelsea from 2000, although he spent the majority of his last five seasons at the club as understudy to Petr Cech.
