Star Trek: Discovery trailer offers first look at new crew

Featuring enough lens flare to make JJ Abrams proud

At last, the first trailer for Star Trek: Discovery — the first new Star Trek TV show in 16 years — has finally landed, offering an intriguing extended look at the upcoming series.

The clips starts with The Walking Dead's Sonequa Martin-Green, who plays first officer Burnham, walking alongside Michelle Yeoh's Captain Philippa Georgiou on a mysterious planet.

Cut to Burnham standing dominantly on the Discovery’s bridge, looking out over the universe. Soon enough, Klingons appear, leading to explosions and enough lens flare to make JJ Abrams proud. Watch below.

Earlier this year, during a celebratory 50th-anniversary panel at Comic Con, a teaser trailer was released, debuting the show’s title and the USS Discovery.

"It’s not going to be episodic," showrunner Bryan Fuller — best known for Hannibal and currently working on American Gods — revealed at the panel. "We’re going to be telling stories like a novel."

At the same event, Fuller confirmed the show will take place in the same timeline as the other TV shows, rather than the JJ Abrams-led films.

CBS has confirmed Discovery will debut in the fall.
