BRIGHTON and Hove Albion have gained approval for a superstore and garden centre to be built on their ground, which should increase the site's value to about pounds 4m. The Second Division club have debts of pounds 3.5m.

LEGIA WARSAW could lose the Polish title if a second drugs test on one of their players proves positive. Roman Zub failed his first test last month after a 1-0 win over Widzew Lodz, and the result of the second test will be known on 9 July. If a player is found to have taken drugs, the opposing team receives a walkover, which would cost Legia two points and the championship.

THE Italian League have cancelled Perugia's promotion to the Second Division after investigating a bribery charge against the club. Perugia will stay in the Third Division and their president, Luciano Gaucci, has been banned from the game for three years.

BELGIUM and the Netherlands plan to make a joint bid to stage the European Championship finals in 2000.

MARCIANO VINK, Ajax's Dutch international midfielder, has signed a three- year contract with the Italian Serie A club, Genoa, for a fee to be agreed.

LAURENT BLANC, the 27-year-old French international sweeper, has joined St Etienne from Nimes on a three-year contract.
