Anthony Weiner has reportedly checked in to a rehabilitation facility that treats sex addiction days after the FBI found emails relating to Hillary Clinton’s misuse of her personal email server on his computer.

The former member of congress who ran for mayor of New York City checked in to an unnamed rehab facility on Wednesday, as reported by the Daily Mail.

The news comes one month after federal investigators said they were looking into whether he sent sexual messages to a 15-year-old girl.

That investigation led to finding emails that were "pertinent" to the now closed investigation of Ms Clinton’s misuse of top secret and classified information when she was secretary of state.

Mr Weiner, 52, recently announced his separation from his wife, top Clinton aide Huma Abedin, after the New York Post discovered he had sent more lewd messages to women online, including sending a photo of his underwear to a woman while his three-year-old son was sleeping beside him.

He told the Associated Press in September that he had “likely been the subject of a hoax”.

Democrats have mostly stayed silent on the topic. Vice president Joe Biden said in an interview this week that he did not want to comment as he was "not a fan" of Mr Weiner.

Mr Weiner, once a popular and outspoken New York politician, resigned in 2011 after he mistakenly uploaded a lewd picture on twitter.

In 2013 he repeated the mistake when he sent explicit photos under the pseudonym "Carlos Danger" to a woman in Indiana.

His rise and fall in the public spotlight - to within an inch of mayorship of the largest city in the US - was recorded in a new documentary called Weiner this year.

The Daily Mail report could not be immediately verified by The Independent.
