One of the joys of a yoga session is being able to switch off from the outside world and calm the mind. But it’s only possible to fully do that if you’re comfortable in what you’re wearing.
A pair of yoga pants can make or break your practice. If they feel so soft and comfortable that you feel like you’re wearing nothing at all then you are free to fully zone in on your workout. But when they start to sag around the bottom or bunch at the ankles it can bring some unwanted rage to even the most zen of flows.
Unlike gym leggings, which are tighter and compressive to support your muscles, yoga pants tend to be made from a softer, more flexible material. You want them to be able to move with you and take you through all the poses from downward dog to tree and anything else your body is capable of doing.
As tightness is not an issue, yoga pants come in more styles than leggings you might wear for HIIT or weight training. We’re talking about flared yoga pants, which are being seen more on TikTok with Gen Z appreciating how they can be worn all day for a variety of occasions. And you don’t need to have ones with a super high waist either. We’re noticing a lot more leggings with a mid to low rise waistband so that you’re not distracted by anything digging into your tummy as you do your class.
Most yoga pants are minimalist in design with as few seams as possible so they fit like a second skin. There’s no need for pockets when you’re doing yoga as your phone or keys will either fall out or make a noise when you’re in a headstand, which is hardly relaxing.
To maximise comfort, it’s a good idea to look at the pants’ fabric to make sure it’s sweat wicking and breathable so you can end a flow feeling better than when you started it.
How we tested
We tested the leggings for flexibility, breathability and overall comfort in a variety of studio classes and at home following the YouTube channel Yoga with Adriene. We tested them in slow paced yin classes to assess how well they held their shape in different poses and in faster vinyasa flow practises to ensure they allowed us to move without restriction.
We did sun salutations, downward dog, and attempted headstands to check the leggings didn’t sag, dig in or become transparent. We also washed each pair to test whether they remained soft and supportive after multiple uses.
