Tottenham midfielder Moussa Sissoko has said his side must not dwell on their “painful” Premier League form as they prepare for their Carabao Cup fixture against Colchester.

Spurs suffered a 2-1 defeat at Leicester on Saturday, leaving them in seventh place in the Premier League with just two wins so far.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side believed they were 2-0 up at the King Power Stadium at one point, but VAR ruled that Son Heung-min was marginally offside in the build-up to Serge Aurier’s finish.

A trip to League Two’s Colchester on Tuesday presents Spurs with an opportunity to quickly improve their fortunes, though the fixture could also worsen the team’s predicament.

Sissoko said the manner of the loss at Leicester frustrated Spurs but that they must focus on what is still ahead of them.

“There is a lot of frustration, but we need to accept it – even if it is painful – because we have another game on Tuesday,” Sissoko said.

“Even if it is a cup game, we have to be focused on that game. We need to work hard and analyse what went wrong [against Leicester] and move on.

“We don’t have time to think too much, because we have to recover as soon as possible and be ready for Tuesday if we want to have a good game and win.

The Carabao Cup tie kicks off a busy run of fixtures for Spurs that sees Pochettino’s men play seven matches before the end of October – including the visit of Bayern Munich in the Champions League and a trip to Anfield.

Midfielder Dele Alli and defender Davinson Sanchez were left out at Leicester on Saturday, so should return to the Tottenham squad for their Colchester clash.

Goalkeeper Hugo Lloris is set to be absent again, however, following the birth of his third child.
