A BRITISH engineer has been murdered on his way home from a restaurant in Nigeria. Damien White was shot by robbers on Wednesday night in the town of Port Harcourt.

Mr White, 24, was due to be married in July. Yesterday his fiancee was said to be 'absolutely devastated'.

He was in Nigeria negotiating a contract for his company, Corpro Systems, based in Aberdeen.

Per Arno, managing director, said yesterday: 'He was hanging back in case there was a follow-up contract. He had finished the job on Sunday.' He added: 'We are all just absolutely shocked at what has happened.'

Mr White had been in Nigeria for 16 days, his second stint in the country. He had gone to the restaurant with colleagues and was being driven home by his friend Emmanuel Georgewill when the shooting happened. Mr Arno said: 'They were driving along when there was gunshot fire. He was killed by two bullet wounds to the back of his head. It took a little while for Emmanuel to realise what had happened. He drove him straight to hospital but doctors said that he had been killed instantly.'

Mr White moved from Newcastle upon Tyne to Aberdeen with his parents 15 years ago. He and his fiancee, Tara Evans, had bought a house in Westhill, just outside the city.

Mr Arno described him as a 'hell of a good guy', who was always cheerful and supportive. 'I just think he was incredibly unlucky. He was in the wrong place at the wrong time. If the bullets had landed six inches to the right or left he would not have died.'
