TOTTENHAM, WHO have had an offer of pounds 3.5m for Tim Sherwood rejected by Blackburn, intend to pursue their interest not only in the midfielder but also in the striker Chris Sutton, who is valued by Rovers at pounds 9m.

Although there are some signs that Rovers would be prepared to part with Sherwood, who would relish the opportunity to move south, prising Sutton away from Ewood Park could be a more difficult task for Tottenham. To try to stir Blackburn's interest Spurs are likely to offer Chris Armstrong as part of the deal, which for both players would cost them up to pounds 13m.

Rovers made enquiries about Armstrong before they signed Kevin Davies in the summer for pounds 7.25m. They have plenty of strikers, with Kevin Gallacher and Martin Dahlin also on their books, but the club is hardly desperate for money.

Walter Smith, the Everton manager, is prepared to sell Craig Short to Nottingham Forest in a pounds 1.5m deal. The fee has been agreed by Dave Bassett and only doubts over thge fitness of Everton's Slaven Bilic have prevented the Forest manager, who sold Colin Cooper to Middlesbrough, from having talks with the centre-back.

Short, who is out of contract at the end of the season, has been in Smith's side this season, but the arrival of Marco Materazzi from Italy and the return of David Unsworth leaves Everton with plenty of defenders.

Lou Macari, the former Manchester United and Scotland player, who has been out of work since leaving Stoke City to concentrate on a court battle with Celtic, is to join the scouting staff at Sheffield United, and help the manager, Steve Bruce, and the coach, John Deehan.

Howard Wilkinson, the England under-18 coach, has denied he has been approached to coach the South African national team. The South African Football Association's chief executive, Danny Jordaan, said he had spoken to Wilkinson as well as Ron Atkinson and the former Brazil and Saudi Arabia coach, Carlos Alberto Parreira, about the role.

Leicester City are to take disciplinary action against their captain, Steve Walsh, because of his verbal attack on Uriah Rennie, the referee of Saturday's Premiership match away to Blackburn.

Walsh criticised Rennie after the official had booked seven players and then denied Walsh what he thought was a late penalty following a challenge by Sherwood.

The former Tranmere Rovers chairman, Frank Corfe, is asking for pounds 7m for his 86 per cent shareholding in the Nationwide First Division club. Corfe walked out on the club at the weekend because he was disenchanted by the attitude of fans. He has denied he is to join up again with the former Tranmere chairman, Peter Johnson, at Everton.

Andy Goram, the former Rangers and Scotland goalkeeper, has joined Notts County on a short-term basis. Sam Allardyce, County's manager, said: "Andy is looking for a way to get himself back into the shop window, so the arrangement suits him and us."
