Filippo Inzaghi becomes top UEFA scorer

PA

AC Milan striker Filippo Inzaghi preferred to concentrate on team rather than personal accolades following his side's 2-1 Champions League victory over Marseille.

The veteran striker became the all-time leading goalscoer in UEFA club competitions after scoring twice in the Group C opener.

Inzaghi took his personal goal tally to 68 to edge ahead of Real Madrid striker Raul.

"I'm very happy about my goals but above all I'm happy about the win because this is a difficult time for Milan," he said.

"We're happy for ourselves and we're very happy for the coach (Leonardo) because we've faced a lot of obstacles.

"We can be very proud because we won at a very difficult ground to come to."

Elsewhere, former Internazionale striker Adriano is ready to return to Europe to re-launch his career ahead of next summer's World Cup.

The Brazilian was allowed to leave the Italian champions in April following a series of disciplinary problems and returned to South America with Flamengo.

He has scored 12 goals in 19 appearances for the Brazilian club and has now hinted that a move back to Europe could be on the cards as he looks to reclaim his place in the international set-up.

"I came here to rediscover my consistency by scoring on a regular basis," said the 27-year-old striker, who has been linked with AS Roma.

"I've achieved that and now I feel like a completely new player. I'm ready for a new challenge.

"Now my dream is the Brazilian national team and playing for them at next year's World Cup."

Meanwhile, AS Roma captain Francesco Totti has revealed he came close to quitting the club.

The 32-year-old playmaker has spent his entire career with the Giallorossi making almost 500 appearances, but came close to leaving in 2001 after they won the Scudetto.

"I had plenty of other chances and I did consider leaving after we won the Scudetto," he revealed.

"However, I met with the club and we cleared things up."
