The best Bluetooth speakers aren’t necessarily the ones that blast out the biggest sounds. These days, we want more from our speakers, including a rugged design that will stand up to a certain amount of wear and tear.
We suggest looking for designs with a minimum protection level of IP67, which means the Bluetooth speaker will be completely protected from dust, and can survive being (albeit briefly) submerged in water to a depth of up to one metre.
Certain speakers can be wirelessly connected with other models to ensure the sound covers larger areas, and this particular feature is becoming increasingly common on budget models too, not just the most expensive speakers. That said, if sound distribution is key, we also recommend looking for a wraparound-style cylindrical speaker, rather than a one-sided speaker.
When it comes to battery life, look for a minimum of 10 hours. USB-C charging ports, which most Bluetooth speakers have, are essential for speedy power boosts. Don’t worry too much about the type of Bluetooth, as almost all wireless speakers use Bluetooth five (rather than its predecessor, Bluetooth four), which means speeds of up to 2Mbps and compatibility with a slew of smart home devices.
Finally, apps aren’t the be all and end all, but they can make the setup process much quicker and easier, making it simpler to get to grips with features such as voice control modes and multi-speaker connectivity. In a nutshell? If you’re keen to familiarise yourself with your new speaker in minimum time, it’s worth looking for a speaker that comes with a bespoke app.
How we tested
We’re not just music fans – we’re huge fans of the outdoors, and we rarely leave home without a portable speaker stashed in our backpack, cabin bag or jacket. In short, we know what to look for in a Bluetooth speaker, and we took the time to truly put them to the test, using them with and without their dedicated apps, disconnecting and connecting them and evaluating their audio output in a wide range of situations.
We considered battery life, portability and the ease with which the controls could be tweaked, as well as their overall appearance – because let’s face it, looks aren’t everything, but who doesn’t want a stylish speaker?
