A motorcycle officer escorting Melania Trump’s motorcade in North Carolina was injured in a crash as the First Lady travelled to a campaign event, according to reports.

The officer with Huntersville Police Department in Charlotte was in Ms Trump’s procession to a “Make America Great Again” rally on Monday when the collision with another vehicle occurred, Wsoc reported.

Police said there was no threat to Ms Trump or other personnel in the motorcade, while the unidentified officer was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

“I spoke w the injured @HPDNC officer this evening & was glad to hear he is doing well,” Ms Trump said in a tweet after her campaign event.

“Thank you, as always, to all of the law enforcement officials who work to protect us every day!”

The incident reportedly occurred about 3.25 pm EST on Woodlawn Avenue near South Tryon Street. Police are investigating but have not shared further details.

Ms Trump appeared at the campaign event in Huntersville a short time later, speaking to a crowd of about 300 at Magnolia Woods event centre about 4pm.

“Instead of working with our administration to unify and protect our nation, they only sought to attack us,” she said at the event, according to Wsoc. “At first, they attacked my husband for being too aggressive -- and now they say he hasn’t done enough.”
