Equestrianism: Twomey leads clean sweep for the Irish
Billy Twomey received a roar of approval when he led a clean sweep for the Irish, who filled the top five places in the Power and Speed contest on the second day of the Dublin Super League Show. Twomey had successes here with ponies, but his victories with horses have proved even more satisfying - especially as he is based in England.
"I'm away for most of the time, so it's fantastic to let Irish people know that I'm able to win," he said. Twomey, a member of the winning Irish team here in 2000, will be riding in his second Dublin Nations Cup for the Aga Khan Trophy today, when he partners Luidam.
Cian O'Connor kept the home crowd happy with a spectacularly fast winning round on ABC Landliebe in the Speed Derby, in which Ireland continued to show their superiority by taking the top three places.
Michael Whitaker, with whom Twomey was based until setting up his own yard in England last year, will be riding Fleur as part of today's British team that also includes Nick Skelton, Robert Smith and William Funnell.
