Adele has announced she will be headlining this year's Glastonbury festival.

The singer-songwriter appeared to let slip the news while live on stage in London.

Glastonbury Festival tweeted to confirm the news soon after she let the cat out of the bag.

The main stage has seen many of the top acts - and controversy - over the years.

Last year, a petition was launched against US rapper Kanye West headlining which he said was "an insult to music fans".

On stage he declared himself to be "the greatest rapper in the world" and brought an entourage so large other bands performing reportedly had to reduce their guestlists.

There should be no such controversy surrounding Adele who won even more adoration from her fans for her humble (and explicit) acceptance speech at the Brit awards last month where she picked up four gongs.

No artist had taken four Brits in one night since Blur at the height of Britpop in 1995.

The success of Adele’s third album, 25, both in terms of records sales and awards has been seen as a victory for her independent record label - XL Recordings.

Her decision to withhold the album from streaming platforms, seen as the future of the business, appeared to have maximised sales - much like Taylor Swift's decision to withdrawn her 2014 album 1989 from Spotify.

The album, which follows on from the criticially acclaimed 21, was the best selling home entertainment title of 2015 - racking up 2.6m CD and download sales despite only being released six weeks before the end of the year.
