Letter: Magpie cull
Sir: I agree with Lucy Lawrence's observations about the damage done to small songbirds by magpies (letter, 22 November), but would point out that magpies are listed in Schedule 2, Part II of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 as "birds which may be killed or taken by authorised persons". Magpies are thus regularly killed as a pest species by gamekeepers and the like.
